At 18 he travelled from Rhode Island to the Bath festival but "exhausted after hours of listening to music I fell asleep on the damp ground". Two years later he was performing Chuck Berry and Eddie Cochran on the ukulele.

When he first heard Purple Haze, aged 14, the precocious future leader of Talking Heads informed his father that "the electric guitar has broken free from history".

I have yet to see other resources go into the psychology of how language affects lyric writing.D avid Byrne was not like other boys. The same goes for the lyric section of the book. Once a musician or songwriter learns those fundamentals, all the doors open for them to make conscious creative decisions. How Music Really Works is still the only book which explains that in accessible language how all that works. Youtube has been a great resource for me as a visual learner, but there still aren't videos that explain exactly how notes within a chord interact with neighboring notes and WHY they create certain effects.

I feel that most beginners wanting to learn about chord progressions and how to write melodies should dedicate time to read this book before searching haphazardly on the internet or even Youtube. I first read this amazing book in 2014 and since then I still come back to it as a reference to improve my understand of music and songwriting! It's loaded with excellent examples using popular and successful songs to demonstrate how theory translates into emotional enjoyment of music and songwriting as both communication and an art.
